Exert:
Several new elements were incorporated into this year's concert. The guys of Idol formed a five-piece band, playing actual instruments on a rudimentary cover of The Beatles' "Hey Jude." Blake Lewis wisely gave props to Chicago as the "birthplace of house music" before spicing up "She Will Be Loved" with loop pedals and robotic beat boxing in an inventive solo turn.

SEEN ON SCENE: Audience members at the I.O. Theater were surprised Monday night when "American Idol" runner-up Blake Lewis (in town for the "Idol" gig Tuesday at the Allstate Arena) popped into I.O. and joined the monologue that's part of "The Armando Diaz Show" -- and contributed fun sound effects and offstage voiceovers. Turns out Lewis has a background in improv.

Exert:
Lewis, who battled it out with Sparks for the No. 1 spot, was obviously a favorite with the Allstate audience. Young girls screamed as he performed a number of beat-box renditions of tunes. Included in his set list was a likable version of The Zombies’ “Time of the Season.”
