TORONTO — To hear Sebastian Pigott tell it, there's nothing like a singing competition to launch an acting career.
Since being voted off "Canadian Idol" last year, the young crooner has enjoyed a steady stream of television gigs with stints on "The Listener," "Heartland," "The Border," and most significantly, "Being Erica."

Pigott popped up in the season premiere of the time-travelling series as an intriguing barista at Erica's favoured cafe but, on Tuesday, his storyline takes off as his character reveals a musical side, and a charming ability to get under Erica's skin.
"It's been a great year since Idol," says Pigott, who had a modest acting resume before reaching the Top 8 on "Idol."

"Doing a show like 'Canadian Idol,' it's a wonderful boost - exposure-wise and promotion-wise. Since then, I've been booked solid acting and working. I consider myself an artist above all and any chance I get to make art and get paid for it is golden for me."

Pigott certainly makes the most of his screen time Tuesday as he performs a song he wrote with his brother Oliver, who also auditioned for "Idol" but fell short of the Top 10.

Later, he strips down to his underwear for a comical time-travelling sequence with star Erin Karpluk, whose neurotic character revisits past regrets each week with the help of her therapist.

When Pigott read the script and saw the extent of his bold character's exposure, he says he immediately took drastic action to prepare.

"I went out and got protein powder and hit the gym, religiously," he says.

"If you're going to get naked on TV you want to look good, you know. And then I got all these people coming up to me afterwards going, 'You know we've got to get you into a tanning bed.' I play a barista! At what point do you think you should be hitting the tanning salon?"

Adding to the spectacle was the fact that the sequence was shot in the middle of the day on a Toronto bridge. Police closed off access to passersby, but an apartment building overlooking the scene gave some residents a birds-eye view, and that nearly brought proceedings to a halt, he says.

"Apparently somebody came down from the apartment just beside and they thought I was about to jump," says Pigott.

"They thought that's what all the police were there for - some naked guy in a cowboy hat was about to hurl himself off the bridge."

Nothing so dire is in store this week, with Pigott's character Kaj proving he's just quirky enough to keep up with Erica's off-kilter dalliances from reality.

Pigott says he's especially thrilled to be able to meld his musical side with his acting passion, noting that he'll get to sing again on the show.

"There's a lot of stuff in the works with the music side of 'Being Erica' and I've been talking with Temple Street about doing some more stuff with them," he says.

All this coincidentally dovetails with an album release in November of music from the Pigott Brothers. Pigott says he and his brother Oliver recorded a raw rootsy-rock disc for less than $1,000 and plan to release a single by the end of the month.
In the new year, he's also set to play a sociopath on the upcoming cop series "The Bridge," and will star in a western he wrote called, "The Two Deaths of Henry Baker."

Pigott says he always hoped "Idol" would help him land a diverse career.

"I went in with the plan to not win and I wanted to capitalize on it and get myself out there and get more work for myself as an artist," he says.

"It's all I ever wanted. Right now my m.o. is just to keep the momentum going and not shoot myself in the foot."

They also sang a few older songs, a few covers, and jammed with Earl Stevenson, the drummer and the bassist until it was time to stop. It was an absolute fun night, full of great music with some great voices!

7) Have you ever been front row for a concert? If so, what show? Well duh! Front row is the best place to be. I've been front row many times, but the best one was for INXS in Toronto. OH MY!
8) What were the worst seats you’ve ever had at a show? The only real bad seat I've ever had was for my very first big arena concert, Bryan Adams back in the 80's. We were in the nosebleed... Still, I was up on my feet, dancing and screaming and having a good time!
9) Have you ever gotten in a fight with someone at a show? No. But I threw dirty looks to some obnoxious, intoxicated peeps. And I received a few from people who were seated and wanted me to sit down. How obnoxious! If they want to sit at a rock show, they should stay the fuck home!
10) What was the best concert you’ve ever been to and when? (only one!) I can't answer that! I love different concerts for different reasons. But if I absolutely had to choose... Probably INXS in Toronto in 2006 at the ACC.
11) What is the worst concert you’ve ever been to and when? (only one!) The Killers. I love the band, but they are just. not. good live.
12) Which band/artist always has the best merch? I don't buy much merch aside from albums, so I wouldn't know...
13) Which band do you have the hardest time buying tickets for? I've had a heck of a time buying tickets for INXS, but usually it's not so bad buying tickets since I like smaller scaled bands.
14) If you could choose one person that would go with you to every concert you see from now until the day you die, who would it be? Can't decide - different peeps for different artists! I wanna go to concerts with enthusiastic fans, first and foremost.

Voted off Canadian Idol's top 16, Oliver Pigott is the one who got away. First recognized alongside his younger brother Sebastian, Oliver is remembered for his rich Americana rock sound that evokes John Mayer and Jack Johnson.
Oliver's departure from the "talent show" was much too premature. Still this folk/blues inspired talent didn't stand a chance among the fluff that viewers vote through into the finals year after year. So as the expression goes, this was a blessing in disguise. Pigott's early elimination from Idol gave him the time to prepare for what is coming next.

How's life after Canadian Idol?

The response has been great. Now my music is reaching a wider range of people. Idol also helped me develop as a performer.

How did the show help you grow?

I didn't have a lot of experience in front of the camera. Your mannerisms and the way you need to speak in front of the camera are definitely things that are not instilled. It took me a while to get used to it. I was much more comfortable with it near to where I was eliminated.

Do you feel the judges' opinions affect the votes that keep contenders in the game?

The judges have an influence and definitely helped keep me in there for a while. The judges serve to give people a picture of what they are watching, but the Canadian public is able to come to their own conclusions. Conclusions that are a combination of what the judges have to say and people take it into their own hands.

What was competing against your brother like?

Technically we were in competition, but it never felt that way. It never felt that way with everybody else either. I feel grateful to have met everyone on the show. It also gave my brother and I a chance to reconnect because we've been living in different countries. I know that we're going to be collaborating a lot now. We went into Canadian Idol to have fun and that's what happened.

How do you make a song choice from the billions of songs that you could choose from?

The songs that I chose are indicative of a lot of stuff that I have written. I grew up on the blues and a lot of my own music is based around it. I think you saw that when I performed those songs in Idol.

What do you hope viewers see in your performances?

I wanted to give people the idea that when I perform a song I interpret it in a way that is appropriate to the song. That may be in a wildly sexual performance or something toned down and subtle.

What is your next move?

A lot of touring. It's going to be great to be able to brainstorm with Sebastian. Really good and unexpected things are going to come out of it, things that I don't even necessarily know about yet. You'll be seeing a lot of us.

I went to see Lukas Rossi on Wednesday, and Oliver Pigott was in the audience. We chatted with him, and he told us he was doing a show with his brother on the Friday. We decided to go and check it out. I'm SO glad I did!!!

The show was suppose to be the Piggot Brothers only, but we had a few surprises in store for us, starting with the opener.

Gary Morissette opened the night with some covers (American Pie, some Bob Seger, etc). He was really good. Not a lot of banter between the songs, but he seems happy to be there. He sounded awesome on American Pie, I think it was the crowd's favorite. He didn't use just his gravelly voice, he showed us some of that softer side he's got, and it was a really nice surprise. I really wish he had shown us that side of his voice on the show.



The bros came on stage shortly after. There was a CTV producer and cameran filming for the show (hometown visits). So the bros did "Dream" for them. So good. They ended up singing it three times during the night, but no one minded. They played some covers (Sebastian played Bring It On Home To Me - WOW - and Blue Moon in Kentucky) and some originals, too (Sebastian did Sinking California, Oliver did Our Generation, Shed Your Sins, Rich and Loaded, Still On Your Mind, Follow That Car, Let Your Devil Die). They played together and solo. They did some improv as well. Tetiana came up on stage at the end and played "Fly Like and Eagle" with them.



They are AMAZING. Oliver has got a great voice, much more powerful than what we've seen on TV. He's so passionate up there on stage! Sebastian seems a bit more shy, but his voice is awesome, too. He seemed to want Oliver to play with him a lot. I understood why at the end of the night, when I chatted with Sebastian for a minute or two - he told me it had been 5 years since the last time they played together, so it was quite a special show for them both. Oliver also told us that Sebastian was really, really upset that he got voted off.



For some reasons, all my pictures of Sebastian turned out blurry. I have a video of them singing "Dream", but until I can find a way to modify the sound, I won't be able to post it.

It is an absolute pleasure to see them play together. They feed off of each other's energy, look at each other a lot and the joy of playing together is palpable. They harmonize perfectly together. Another thing I noticed: those guys love music, they breath it, feel it, live it, they ARE music. It just oozes from them, it runs through their veins. It's amazing to witness such passion, such love for music.



A while after the bros, Katelyn Dawn came up on stage, unannounced, and started playing guitar. Tetiana went up and sang with her, as well as Jessica Sheppard. Katelyn and Tetiana sang Hallelujah and it really was beautiful, so much better than on the show!

Really, all of them came off as so much more talented than what we've seen of them on the show. I really wish Canada would have seen them like we did tonight!

After a recap of how we got to the Top 16, Ben calls two people from each performance night: Martin Kerr and Mark Day from Monday night, and Gary Morissette and Drew Wright from Tuesday night. Mark Day is SAFE, while Martin Kerr is GOING HOME. Bullshit. Mark Day should have been the one to go home. Gary Morissette is GOING HOME and Drew Wright is SAFE.

Too bad, I liked Omar, and would have taken him over Mark Day ANY DAY. Mitch is SAFE and Katelyn is GOING HOME. Canada got that one right, at least.

Now the rest of the contestants are at center stage with Ben - Adam Castelli and Marie-Pierre Bellerose from Monday night, as well as the Pigott Brothers, Oliver and Sebastian, from Tuesday night. Oh dear. Will one of the bros go home tonight?

So Adam is SAFE (yeah, I like him) and Marie-Pierre is GOING HOME. Which means... Yes, one of the Pigott Brothers will be leaving the show tonight. What a load of CRAP! Sebastian agrees: "It's low, it's low!"

And of course, Ben will reveal the last member of the Top 10 after the break...

Ben gets right to it - Sebastian is SAFE and Oliver is GOING HOME. Sebastian looks upset, while Oliver seems to be content with what he's accomplished.

I am PISSED. I just knew that by pairing the two bros on the same performance night, one of them would end up going home. They share the same fan base, and they both come from Toronto, which seems to have a lot of contestants on the show this year. Why can't Mark Day have gone home? Why not Drew Wright instead? I like Mitch and Adam, but I'd have rather seen Oliver in there instead of them. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Next week the Top 10 will be performing songs from David Bowie.

Stars Down - Lee's Palace, Toronto, ON - July 9th 2008 - Show Review

Lukas Rossi is no stranger to the Toronto music scene. He's played many shows in TO, and his most recent Love and Lust Tour shows were great success. But it was the very first time his new band, Stars Down was playing in the Big Smoke. I was so excited to see them play together for the first time! I've heard such great things from peeps who saw the show in L.A., I was really anxious to finally see them live!!!

And boy, I was NOT disappointed. From the very first song to the very last one, Lukas (vocals and guitar), German (backing vocals and bass) and Jon (drums) were simply put, AMAZING. Fantastique, merveilleux, incroyable, as I told them later on. The crowd was very receptive and giving their boy tons of love, and embracing the band as well. And the band gave all their love right back to us!!!

I was familiar with all the songs but one, Burning Bridges. Awesome new song! The songs Lukas played on his acoustic tour were done with the full band this time around, and it was like hearing new songs all over again. They sound so different, but totally amazing nonetheless. And the new Stars Down songs? Just fucking awesome. They are quite different from what Lukas has written previously, but just every bit as good.

The band also played two covers, which fit really well with the rest of the set: Here Comes The Rain Again (which I think of lukas song now, he makes it his own!) and Anything Anything (that one totally rocked!).



Lukas voice was amazing. And he looked so happy! It was the full on rock star we saw last night, complete with the "Lukas" moves and the "Lukas" faces. Intense, mesmerizing, can't take your eyes off of him!

It was the first time I had seen Jon play drums. He's SO freaking GOOD! It was a lot of fun to watch him play off of German, too.

And German? He gets so into the music, he's great to watch! And he's funny - he talked quite a bit to the crowd, and seemed to get a kick out of playing in Lukas' hometown.

My favorites from the new songs are Monster and Mona Lisa. And they work so freaking well live! Awesome to hear them last night.

There were two special moments during the set. Lukas father, who goes to many of Lukas show, was there in the audience. And for the very first time, Lukas mom was there as well, which made this extra special. Lukas had us chanting her name to say hi to her. It was such a nice moment!

And then there was Headspin. Lukas played it acoustic and changed it up quite a bit. He ended it singing "That's the way I want to live my life, without your curse" a few times, then encouraging the crowd to sing along. At first it was pretty faint, like the crowd was shy or something. But then Lukas motioned for us to sing louder, and turned the mike towards us. It was beautiful to hear the crowd get louder and louder. The emotion was quite visible on Lukas face.

At the end of the set, we were treated to an encore with Car Crash! I love, love, love that song. Live, I love it even more! The band said their goodbyes after that and headed backstage. But the crowd WOULD NOT quiet down - cheers, screams, claps, we were making so much noise for the band! People were banging their glass on tables, stomping on the floor, cheering for more. And we were rewarded with a second encore! Lukas came back saying they did not have another song ready, and they ended up singing Good Enough, which was totally awesome.

As a bonus, we saw a few people from Canadian Idol - Zack Werner (judge), Jessica Sheppard, Tetiana Ostenpovitch and Oliver Pigott. I talked a little bit with Oliver (he's very nice!) - he told us he had gotten eliminated, and we were all shocked. He seemed ok with it all tho. He told us he's playing a show with his brother Sebastian this Friday in Toronto at Reilly's. Come check him out!

The night couldn't have been better, and I felt so proud and happy for Lukas. He deserves the recognition and success! I already cannot wait to see him play again.

The band is too loud... Aside from the falsetto, I thought he did awesome. He's got an unusual voice, but I really like it. It sounded more powerful than usual, too.

Gary Morissette - House of the Rising Sun
Huge song.... I usually like Gary and his hyper gravelly voice. But tonight, the raspiness, the "gravel" seemed forced. The slow beginning was a nice touch, but his voice was weak. Then the more up tempo part of the song came, and I felt like he was hiding his inability to sing on pitch behind his gravel voice. The arrangement was cool tho. Far from his best, and most likely will send him home.

Katelyn Dawn - Zombie (The Cranberries)
WTF??? Zombie for this little girl??? In a pop context, I guess she did good. The arrangement was nice. But in a rock context? OMG, that was like a little kitten trying to produce a big lion roar and failing. No, just no.

Oliver Pigott - Lean On Me
No guitar... He is a tiny bit awkward without it, but still seems pretty comfortable. He reminds me a bit of JD, with the hand movements. VERY nice arrangement, and I absolutely adored I Oliver's bluesy voice on this. Very, very, VERY nice. For once, I agree 100% with Zack! *throwing up in my mouth a little*

Sebastian Pigott - Bring it on Home To Me
He seemed so nervous and almost shy singing the first verse... By the second verse he looked more comfortable and sounded incredible when reaching for the highest notes... The harmonica was such a great touch! Too funny the judges were commenting to Oliver about bringing out the harmonica just moments before. I loved the performance and the comfortable feeling I get when I listen to Sebastian sing. Only negative to me is that this particular song highlighted some of Sebastian's weakness in his voice rather than complimenting them. Still, total awesomeness. Sex symbol, Farley??? :) Love it!!!! And Ben's comment about the mikes tand? *L*

Earl Stevenson - Like A Rolling Stone
I don't know what to make of this guy! He moves so awkwardly, but it looks so natural!! I didn't like this song choice for him as I thought it showed the flaws in his voice. But I love Earl, I love his natural charisma and is rough talent. I love him because he is himself, and nothing else.

Katherine St-Laurent - Love Is a Battlefield
Her voice is not cutting through the music at the top of the song. A slowed down acoustic version of this would have been great for her, but I have mixed feelings about this up tempo number. Gotta admit tho, the last little bit when she let loose and went with the raspiness was really good.

Drew Wright - The Reason
Aw, he messed up the lyrics and let it show. I liked his stage presence and his confidence, but I was not crazy about this song for him. I have a hard time watching him, too. Listening is good, but not watching...

I love how Canadian Idol is changing it up this year! Tonight, the judges have chosen 4 encores from last night's performance show. They will be performing again tonight.

Farley picked Theo Tams, who performs "Collide" again. And it was even better than the night before!

Zack picked Amberly Thiessen. She performs "Everything I own" once again.

Jake picks Oliver Pigott, who sings "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" again tonight. Jake says Oliver is the kind of artist that he would sign. Nice endorsement for this Pigott. It's great to hear this one again...

Sass picked Omar Lunan, and we hear "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" again.

I was kinda disappointed that Sebastian Pigott was not asked to do an encore - I thought his quirky version of "Daydream" was really well done.

From Tuesday night, Jesse, Adam and Jessica are in the bottom 3.

One of each group is safe, and the other two are headed home.

And the first singer from Monday night to go home is Paul Clifford. Wow, I did not see that one coming. I really don't think he deserved to go home just yet.

From Tuesday night, the first singer to be eliminated is Jesse Cottam. I didn't like his performance last night, but again, I didn't think he deserved to go just yet. Jesse heads back stage, saying we'd see more of his band in the future, 7 Angels.

From Tuesday night, Jessica Sheppard is headed home.

Personally, I would have sent Mark Day and Marie-Pierre Bellerose home from Monday. As for Tuesday's competitors, I would have sent Adam and Katelyn home.

Ben mentions we will have our Top 10 next week - does that mean there will be 6 singers eliminated next week, or did Ben make a mistake?

Jesse Cottam - Iris
I love that song... Jesse's intro is really nice. The low parts are gorgeous, very well executed. But when he launches into the chorus, into the higher register... Did not work for me at all. No power, flat, off at times. Nope.

Theo Tams - Collide
Oh wow, this was GREAT! Love that he plays piano, love his falsetto. Great transition from the verse to the chorus to include the full band into the performance. His voice was great... Nothing but good things to say about this one!

Katherine St-Laurent - The First Cut Is The Deepest
Gotta say, she did that song justice. Very nice. Lots of emotions and a great voice to go with it. I like how her voice is on the verge of breaking when she reaches for the highest notes, it adds lots of honesty and authenticity to her sounds. Nice job.

Omar Lunan - Ain't No Sunshine
WOW! He really isn't my type of singer, but I gotta say, he blew me away tonight. Great soul in his voice, vocals were killer, stage presence was awesome... Lots of passion and I loved the liberties he took with both the melody and the phrasing, Great, great, great!

Earl Stevenson - Something To Talk About
What a weird choice for him! He sounded... weird thoughout, moving in an uncomfortable way all through the performance. Although he was moving around a lot, his voice sounded flat and without much life... Until the last few lines, which were KILLER!!! Why oh why didn't he do this earlier in the song?
