Exclusive Interview with Blake Lewis – Heartbreak on Vinyl Out Now!

http://www.idolstalker.com/exclusive-interview-with-blake-lewis-heartbreak-on-vinyl-out-now/

Have you had a chance to listen to Blake Lewis’ new album, Heartbreak on Vinyl? If you haven’t, you definitely need to check it out (it’s out today! Buy it on Amazon or iTunes!).

It’s a lot closer to what you would expect from Blake than the music he released on Audio Day Dream and I really can’t say enough about how happy I am for him. I had the opportunity to chat with Blake this morning. Here’s the quick interview!

Idol Stalker: What were your main inspirations for the songs on Heartbreak on Vinyl?
Blake Lewis: My ex-girlfriend, actually. When I started making the album, it was back in January when I was getting out of a relationship and suffered my first heartbreak. I first wrote ‘Our Rapture of Love’ and then I wrote ‘Sad Song’ after we broke up. I tried to get her back which led to ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ and ‘Left My Baby For You.’

IS: How is this album different than Audio Day Dream?
BL: The content is different. Before, I set out to make a dance album versus a heartbreak album. This one is more personal and a little deep and sentimental. ADD already had a set concept since it had been in my head for four years before. Heartbreak on Vinyl is kind of organic. ADD was a pop album that was made in a hurry but Heartbreak was recorded at my house and I got to collaborate with my friends.

IS: Has signing with Tommy Boy Records given you more creative freedom?
BL: Yeah. I got the record done, created it and then turned it in. With Clive Davis, there was too much meddling where he’d say things like “I don’t like this chorus” and we’d have to make changes. It’s not like that now. I have my job and they have theirs.

IS: What is your favourite track?
BL: They are all sentimental. ‘Binary Love’ is very seductive. It was in the works before the rest of the songs while the others came about more organically. Heartbreak on Vinyl is close to my heart and is one of my favorite songs that I have ever written. I gave a copy of the album to my ex.

IS: Really? How did that go?
BL: It was great. She’s a great person and we’ve been friends for 6 years.

IS: You seem to be the sort of artist who is always learning and evolving. Who are your main influences right now?
BL: I’m listening to a lot of electro and I’m in a DJ-conscious frame of mind. I’ve got Jamie Lidell on repeat. It’s feel-good music. I’ve also been listening to Discovery and Glitch Mob is just amazing. It’s the direction that I wish hip hop would take in the future.

IS: What have you got planned over the next few months?
BL: Gigs here and there. Live performances and deejaying. My favorite holiday is just around the corner – Halloween.

IS: Do you dress up?
BL: Oh yeah. I love it. I’m also looking forward to the Heartbreak on Vinyl launch parties.

Thanks again for the interview, Blake!

Blake Lewis - Heartbreak on Vinyl Press Release and single info

http://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/2009...k-on-vinyl.html

LOS ANGELES, CA…July 1, 2009 – American Idol alumni and beat-boxing sensation Blake Lewis is set to release his second studio album, Heartbreak on Vinyl, on October 6th via Tommy Boy Entertainment, it was announced today. The album’s first single, Sad Song, is scheduled to hit radio in July and will become available first to fans through an exclusive ringtone download via the Blake Lewis Official Fan Club.

"Heartbreak On Vinyl is the culmination of over 10 years in the dance scene -- the music that gets me out onto the dance floor to lose my inhibition," said Lewis. "The title is an ode to all the record stores that have been closing down due to my industry eating itself. These are the stores that brought inspiration to all of us music lovers and have led me to make the music I create today. Heartbreak On Vinyl is filled with electro pop goodness, with melodies I cherish and that I hope my fans will sing to. It comes from the land of the broken-hearted to help you mend lonely wounds."

Lewis is currently in the studio finishing his much anticipated second album which will include electronic/pop/dance production. He is working with a host of songwriters, producers and collaborators including S*A*M & Sluggo (Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco), Dave Audé (Pussycat Dolls), Rodney Jerkins (Lady Gaga, Britney Spears), and Jean Baptiste (Will.I.Am, Black Eyed Peas) on an album that promises to be fresh and full of surprises.

"Blake Lewis has the distinction of not only one of the most amazing voices I have ever worked with, but his songwriting and general musical ability on guitar, keys and as a human beatbox combined with his love of new technology and DJ culture makes him uniquely qualified as the rebel American Idol,” said Tom Silverman, Founder and CEO of Tommy Boy Entertainment. “Blake is the most well-known Tommy Boy artist since James Brown. I can’t walk down the street with him without stopping traffic -- but most amazing is the songs he created for this album, the best of which he co-wrote in under 90 minutes and they are out-of-the-park home runs. Blake Lewis is one Idol who will stand the test of time."

Most recently, Lewis has been busy making appearances across the country. He joined the likes of Lady Gaga, Estelle, Katy Perry, Leona Lewis, Gavin Rossdale, and fellow American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson, on the T-mobile GRAMMY Celebration Concert Tour. He also performed for Michelle Obama at the Congressional Clubs’ First Lady’s Luncheon where he even got the first lady, herself, to beat box.

Lewis made a name for himself as the unconventional and charming beat boxer who was selected as first runner up on season six of American Idol in 2007. His cover of Bon Jovi’s You Give Love a Bad Name, was the biggest selling download of the season on iTunes with over 190,000 downloads. His debut album Audio Day Dream hit the Billboard album charts at #10 and has since sold over 350,000 units to date. He created a unique persona for himself as not only a singer-songwriter, but DJ and beatboxer, drawing fans of all ages to his shows, which vary between musical performances and DJ sets.

Idol Worship: Blake Lewis' New Deal; Album To Feature Ben Gibbard?

http://billboard.blogs.com/jadedinsider/2009/02/idol-worship-blake-lewis-new-deal-album-to-feature-death-cabs-ben-gibbard.html

The season six runner-up has signed a new record deal with Tommy Boy Entertainment, the seminal dance/hip hop/electronic label whose catalog includes albums by Africa Bambaataa, Biz Markie and De La Soul. "I'm doing an electro-pop slash real-hip hop-influenced album," he told Billboard. "It's a great record already and we're only five songs into it. We're hoping to have it out for April, so I'm working my butt off."

Blake says there will be a "ton of guests" on the record, mostly Seattle vocalists, but he also has his sights on someone we didn't quite expect: Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie. Turns out, Blake's got a connection. "My manager Leslie Lewis is Jenny Lewis' sister, so it's all a community thing," he said. "I'm hoping to talk to him about it at the Grammys."

In the meantime, Blake, who was dropped by RCA after one album, is getting a kick out of watching the new season of American Idol, for the first time since his near win in 2007. And he's also commenting on it, as a special correspondent for his local FOX station. "It's comedy to me," he said. "Because with the audition episodes, I was there for 12 hours, and to see how they cut it into two cities in a one-hour show, I just laugh about it." -- Shirley Halperin
