American Idol Season 7 - Top 2 - The Grande Finale

Well, this is it! The last performance show of the season. What a trip that was! I have to admit that, coming out of Season 6, where I thought the cast was so lovable - I was really invested in Chris Richardson and Blake Lewis - I didn't believe the "this cast is the best yet!" hype of the beginning of the season. Maybe now that the season is almost over and that we are about to crown a new American Idol, my mind is not as clear as it could be... But I now believe the hype. This WAS the most talented season so far. Not because there were no talents in prior years - there was, and talent that will be hard to surpass (think Clarkson, Underwood, Daughtry), but because there was a heck of a lot of talent on this season. Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, David Hernandez, Chikezie... I expect many from this season will get record deals.

Back to last night's performance show... This was so bittersweet for me! One the one hand, I am thrilled to see this show coming to an end. I've invested so much of my time, energy and love this year that it's time for a break. On the other hand... I don't want it to end! I want to see Cookie on my tv screen every week for the rest of my life. At the same time, I know full well this is only the beginning for this young, talented man. Cliche much? Maybe. But it's the goddamn truth!!!

Alright alright, enough stalling and filler - AI taught me well, n'est-ce pas? - on with the show!!!

Many thought that the boxing analogy AI used to describe both contestants was cheesy and totally ridiculous. I have to admit to the cheesiness of it all. But you know what? I enjoyed it all immensely at the same time. I was so incredibly nervous for Cook - had been for many hours prior to the show, much to my total dismay - and this little silly skid with Michael Buffer introducing "The Real Deal" David "Sugar Foot" Cook and David "Babyface" Archuleta gave me a moment of much needed relief. Gotta say, Cook looked good with those gloves. And the moves? Not bad either.

Ok, ok, the show....

The snarky bitch in me laughed out loud when Ryan, who narrated the contestants introduction package, mentioned that 2 "men" were vying for the price. Two men? Really? Hum, in my opinion, there was ONE man and one kid. I'll let you guess which one is which. And no, the kid is not Simon.

Advice from the judges before we start? "Leave it all out there", "Soak it all up", "May the best man win" and "You gotta hate your opponent". Wow, gimme 10 millions a year, I'll give you advice like that every freaking day of the week!

Ooooooooooh Archuleta....

And David Cook opens the show!!! Is Ryan wearing guy liner?

Round 1 - Clive Davis Choice

I found what the mentors - Clive Davis and Andrew Lloyd Webber - had to say to be really interesting. Clive explains his song choice for Cook by saying he was looking for a song with lyrics expressing the yearning of generations for answers, for spiritual guidance, for the meaning of life... And then all he says about Archuleta's choice is that it's a great song by Elton John and Tupin? Then Webber goes on to tell Cook that he has the vocal ability to pull this off, that he only needs to be brave. And to Archie? That he needs to keep his eyes open. ???

David Cook - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2

David looked so calm and happy. Cook's vocals were very strong and totally rocked this anthem like song! He changed the phrasing a bit to suit his style better, and added a bit more heavy guitar than the original. Going into the crowd was a good idea, too. He looked confident, and I think this was a very solid performance from Cook. He seemed happy with himself, clapping and pumping his fist. Cook is the only one to have ever done a U2 song in a performance show on Idol (yes, I know, Yamin sang One on the final result show).

Randy enraged me from the get go: "I don't know if you did everything you could do with it". Why is Cook expected to change up all his songs when Archie stays in his comfortable little box is beyond me. I for one am glad he didn't change it too much - he would have been crucified for changing an "anthem. You don't touch songs like that" - I can hear it. *sigh* Paula found Cookie: "David Cook has arrived, Amen, Amen, men." Simon thought it was "phenomenal".

David Archuleta - Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me - Elton John

I so did not want to hear Archie sing that song. I really didn't think he could pull it off properly. Well, I need to eat my words. He did it with lots of soul, and everything he's got inside. He produced a few bum notes, but you know what? I loved them. I loved them because it showed how much he was reaching inside and how much of himself he was pouring in that song. He finally connected with the lyrics! I think by far and away this was his best performance of the whole season.

Randy is so far up Archie's ass it'[s not even funny. His talking over Paula "crazy" really bugged me. Paula "The sun is never going down on you" made me chuckle. Simon was right on the money.

HOWEVER - I think round 1 is a tie.

Round 2 - Contestant Choice from Writing Contest Entries

The guys were given the 10 best entries from the song writing contest and were able to choose a song amongst those for themselves. Webber is worried about Cook's voice, and he tries to make Archuleta to reflect on the meaning of the lyrics of his song. "No one is going to take this away from me", says Archie. "If you are gonna go, go for the gold", says Cookie.

David Cook - Dream Big - Emily Shackelton

With his trusty Les Paul in hand, Cook serves us an unusual coronation song. Unusual in the sense that it is not the typically sweet, sappy, cheesy song AI has been offering us for the last 6 seasons. And I really am enjoying it!!! It's hard to do a song that no one knows and make the public fall in love with it. But I think Cook did a great job. He chose a song that is right up his alley and totally show us what kind of artist he is. I thought it was a refreshing choice amongst the cheesy wanna be inspirational typical AI songs. It takes one hope - To make the stars worth reaching for - So reach out for something more... Cook's voice was a bit tired, but he gave it his all, and it was awesome!

Randy didn't like the song but thought Cook was singing his face off. Eh. Paula loved it, while Simon thought it was a lightweight. He didn't feel like it was a winning moment for him. Paula's "It was not the winning song!" really confused me at first. Now I know that the song that won the song writer competition will be performed by the winner on the final result show.

"I feel guuuud, I'm playing for 7000 people so..." - Cook

David Archuleta - In This Moment - Ryan Gillmor

And there is the cheesy, predictable ballad that AI usually favors. It was another "Inside Your Heaven I'm Having My Now Moment" kind of song, and I really hated it. I'll be honest and admit that Archie sang it really well, and those lyrics really fitted him well. I wanna be in this moment, no one can take it from me...

Randy is, if possible, crawling even further up Archie's ass. His face will appear in Archie's mouth if he keeps going up. Paula loved it. Simon loved the egoistical lyrics. He thinks he chose the better song. Wha???? Simon, there is not enough space in Archie's ass, Randy's taking it all up!

Realistically, I'll give Round 2 to Archie. I personally preferred Cook's song, but I am not naive enough to believe that most of America liked the better song. They went for the one that felt safe and familiar. So slight advantage to Archie.

Round 3 - Contestant Choice

David and David chose their songs for this third round. They could choose to sing a new song or something they've done previously in the season. Webber advised Cook to mke his song "more of a cry of passion" and Archuleta to "make people believe what you're singing". Archie will reprise his best performance of the season, Imagine by John Lennon, while Cook will do a song he has been wanting to do for a while now, but had not - The World I Know, by Collective Soul. "They have to sing like it's their very, very last night on the show", says Andrew Lloyd Webber. Dude didn't get the memo that IT IS their last night on the show. *roll eyes*

David Cook - The World I Know - Collective Soul

David saved his strongest, most beautiful performance of the night for last. The simple, understated arrangement really allowed his voice to shine in all its wonderful glory. He had everything in that performance - soft caressing vocals, gritty powerful notes, fantastic falsetto, emotional delivery... I really loved this one. And his tears at the end, no matter what they were for... They were real, honest, genuine and it just makes me love him even more. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

Has our conscience shown?
Has the sweet breeze blown?
Has all the kindness gone?
Hope still lingers on.
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in new york city
And I dont know why.

Are we listening to hyms of offering?
Have we eyes to see that love is gathering?
All the words that Ive been reading
Have now started the act of bleeding into one.

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below.
And I laugh at myself
While the tears roll down.
'Cause it's the world I know.
Ooooh it's the world I know.

Randy, yo, yo, SHUT UP! Let him have his moment!!! He's got a point tho - Cook showed us a lot of different sides to his artistry, and I for one am grateful for that. Paula is giving him a well deserved standing ovation. Simon says Cook is one of the most genuine, nicest guy they've ever had on the show. And then he goes on to being "honest", saying it was a beautiful song but not the right choice of song for Cook on the night. Simon thinks David should have reprise "Hello" or "Billy Jean". Cook explains that for him, the show has been a progression, and that doing something he's done before would have been going backwards when all he wants is to go forward. Simon Cowell, shut up. Your Cookie Love Train card has been revoked.

David Archuleta - Imagine - John Lennon

While I thought Archie did a great job with it the first time around, I really didn't like his take on it last night. Yes, he sang it really well, and I felt he connected more with the lyrics this time around. But this song does NOT need all the runs he injected in there. Totally unnecessary. Me no likey.

Randy made me throw up in my mouth, seriously. Paula loved it. Simon crowned him right there.

Ryan, you are a beautiful man, and I'd do you in a heartbeat, but the guyliner really doesn't work for you.

Round 3 - Cook, all the way baby.

It was interesting to me to see how both Davids reacted after each of their performances. Cookie always seemed happy, calm, at peace, like he's having fun. Archie, on the other hand, was really emotional after each performance, panting and holding back tears. The poor guy looked like he was about to throw up, faint and shit his pants all at the same time. I admired Cook's poise throughout the show, but have to admit that Archuleta's obvious desire for the gold really tug at my heart strings.

As far as the performances tonight. I think both came out swinging for the fences and did really well in their own rights. Archie is not my cup of tea, but I can recognize the kid is talented. In my opinion, he's not quite ready yet, but he'll have a career... A very successful career indeed, be it with the crown of the next American Idol or not on his head. But tonight, I felt that while he sang the crap out of all his songs, he didn't stretch himself, or didn't show anything new. It might have been a good strategy - stick to what you know - or not - not showing growth. David Cook, on the other hand, constantly showed how original he is, and how much he has grown during the competition. His last statement in regards to his song choice of Collective Soul "This whole show was a progression for me, why do something I've already done" says it all. The guy's got mad talent, he's brave and original and doesn't compromise. I admire that in him. He showed us different sides of himself tonight, and it really contrasted with the one dimensional opponent that is Archie. Cook showed us his soul, showed us what he is all about, and I for one love him for it all. You've got a fan for life in me, David Cook.

Tonight promises to be a great show - duets with mentors, many idol alumni singing, the So You Think You Can Dance dancers, as well as many celebrities and of course, our top 2... Tonight, the next American Idol will be crowned.

American Idol Season 7 - Top 3 - Results

From three people to the final 2.... Who will it be?

We start the night with the Top 3 singing "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" and performing a cheesy but fun little dance number. :)

Next, the idols learn what the future has in store for them in this Ford Commercial, "Heaven". After a recap of the previous night's performances, Fantasia Barrino comes on and performs a song called "Bore Me". Ouch.

And on with the results... Starting with David Archuleta. We are shown footage of Archie's homecoming day - gosh!!!!!! :) It's cute, Archie cries he's so overwhelmed by all the love. Ryan reviews what the judges had to say of Archie's performances the night before. Finally, we are shown a clip of David's journey on American Idol.

Syesha's up, and her homecoming video is shown. Ryan recaps the judges comments from the night before and then Sy's journey on Idol is shown.

And finally, it's David Cook's turn. Ryan chats a little bit with David about how he ended up auditioning for Idol. "It's all my little brother Andrew's fault", Cook says, as his brother steps on the stage. David's homecoming whirlwind of a day is then shown - seems like he had quite a busy day with tv and radio interviews in the morning, followed by a mini-concert, a visit to his school where he honored his music teacher, a parade ultimately culminating to a crowd of thousands waiting for David to perform another mini concert at his high school. Andrew is right by his side the whole time, and they both cry during this emotional day. His day end at the baseball field, where he threw the first pitch on the Kansas City Royals mound. After a short recap of the judges comments of his performances the night before, we are shown a video of David's amazing journey on Idol.

And now for the results....

Bye Syesha...

And we have a David VS David finale!

American Idol Season 7 - Top 3

Tonight, the contestants sang 3 songs each - one picked by one of the judge, one picked by the producers and one that the contestants chose for themselves. Typically, Top 3 night is a good night, where the contestants really give it their all to get to the finale. Opinions may vary, of course, but I did think we had a good night, and some really great performances.

David Archuleta - “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel (chosen by Paula Abdul)

I think this was an excellent choice from Paula. Nothing to stretch David's limits, however. But David really did perform this one well. Very pretty.

Syesha Mercado - “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys (chosen by Randy Jackson)

I rally didn't think Syesha could pull this one off. But she did. I thought she sounded the best on that one tonight. Did Randy slip up with "you are where you belong, in 3rd place"?

David Cook - “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack (chosen by Simon Cowell)

When I heard about this song choice, I just knew David was going to kill it. And I was not wrong. Boyfriend sounded GORGEOUS, heartfelt, just really beautiful. Love the arrangement. While I don't think it was his best of the season, I still think it was amongst the very best.

ROUND 1 - I agree with Simon, round one goes to Cook, without a shadow of a doubt.

David Archuleta - “With You” by Chris Brown

The pre-performance chat with Ryan was so awkward.... He's cute, but sooooooooooooooo awkward.... This was an horrible choice for David. I agree with the judges that it was nice he didn't got for a syrupy ballad, but this song really didn't suited him. The lyrics didn't fit David's personality at all, which didn't make for a believable performance. Archiewahwah was really pitchy throughout the song, and his interaction with the crowd, while nice, felt so contrived... It felt like he was trying so hard and concentrating on it so much....

Syesha Mercado -“Fever” by Peggy Lee

Once again, Syesha uses all she can to get by. Short dress, suggestive dancing, provocative lyrics *for american idol at least). While I thought she performed well, it felt very desperate to me. And I agree with the judges - it was a weird choice, especially after she had just sung a contemporary song, and quite well at that. Not into this much.

David Cook - “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot

The barrrrrrrrrrrtender performed another great song. I was left wanting more tho - I love how he builds momentum slowly, but with the time restrain of the show, it leaves me wanting to hear more once he kicks in to higher gear. David was a bit pitchy on this one, which is unusual for him. But still, I loved it. Great, great, great.

ROUND 2 - David Cook again.

David Archuleta - “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg (producer's choice)

I'm not going to harp on the song choice, because it was not under Archie's control. Still, VERY predictable performance. Nice, but nothing wow about it.

Syesha Mercado - “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell (producer's choice)

Not a totally horrible choice for Syesha but also not great. She was pitchy as hell on this tho.

David Cook - “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith (producer's choice)

Absolutely perfect choice for him. I was worried but he pulled it off unbelievably well! Randy SHUT UP!!!!!! You are so far up Archie's ass that you can't hear anything else. I LOVED the "yeah, yeah YEAH!" in the middle. GORGEOUS.

ROUND 3 - David Cook all the way baby!

My ranking of the night:

Cook - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Cook - I Don't Want To Miss A Thing
Archie - And So It Goes
Cook - Dare You To Move
Archie - Longer
Syesha - If I Ain’t Got You
Syesha - Fever
Archie - With You
Syesha - Hit Me Up

This night is always really interesting for me. It really unveil who the judges want to see in the finale, and who the producers are trying to push there, too. Randy clearly loves him some Archie, and he made it clear with his comments to him, but also in how negative he was with the others, even with Cook, who he proclaims to be a fan of. Paula, who always finds something positive to say about everyone, had a hard time saying anything positive about Syesha other than she looked great. And Simon clearly loves him some Cookie, although he seems to remain objective enough to also praise Archie accordingly. The producers, on the other hand, couldn't make it clearer that they want a David-David final 2. Syesha got the short hand of the stick on her choice from them.

Aside from David Cook, I really can care less who gets in the finale of the remaining two, although I'll admit that there's a small part of me that would rather see Archie there, because I think he deserves it more.

We'll see tonight....

American Idol Season 7 - Top 4 - Results

It's results night... Tonight, the Top 4 ill become the Top 3... The contestants who make it to the Top 3 get to go back home for some sort of homecoming celebration. Parade, mini-concert, various appearances... It should re-energize the contestants, so they can come back with a vengeance and offer us great performances for the Top 3 Performance Night!

First, the Top 4 offered us a pretty darn cheesy group sing of “Reeling in the Years”. Funny to watch "The Davids" walking and dancing in time. :)

After a recap of the previous night's show, Ryan brought out David Archuleta. Ryan questioned him on his performances, asking him if he is the next American Idol. Archie answers awkwardly, giggling his way through his answers. He's both painfully awkward and cute all at the same time. Ryan sent him to the couches, safe.

The Idols went to Vegas last week to watch the Cirque Du Soleil show, "Love", based on the music catalogue of The Beatles. The idols went to the show, met the cast, played with dolphins and seem to have had a good, relaxing time. After showing us a recap of the events, Ryan brought out David Cook. Ryan recapped what the judges said about "Hungry Like The Wolf", David nodding in agreement when Ryan said that Simon would have liked to have seen him put more of his own stamp on it. Giggling at the mention of Paula wanting more Cookie, David explained that he felt off all day leading up to the performances. His head was in the wrong place. After receiving advice from Randy on how to reach the finals, he is pronounced SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next the idols offer us a .... rather funny Ford Commercial - Ring of Fire. :) And then it was time for the Q&A from the viewers. A woman called for David Cook, and asked him on a date! David handled it nicely. :) More Q&A for the judges and other contestants. But since I am only interested in David Cook (what? You had not noticed yet?), we'll skip the details - watch the video if you wanna know more. ;) Oh yeah, Maroon 5 performed "If I'll Never See Your Face Again"!

And Bo Bice performed "Witness"! He rocked the stage! He seemed to like David Cook...

And then we got on with our results....

Bye bye Jason..........

American Idol Season 7 - Top 4

Songs that have shaped rock & roll - this was the theme of tonight's show. The contestants were able to choose amongst the songs of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It should have been a great night, by all means...

The judges bickering was at an all time high tonight, and it was pretty painful to listen to. Can't they just give their comments and shut up after? It's not about them, it's about the contestants!

David Cook - Hungry Like the Wolf

David sang first, and he seemed to be a bit off his game. Vocals were great, performance was ok... Simon pissed me off with the "you didn't do what you usually do with the changing... Blah blah blah... Cookie looks HOT... Loved the hand holding, the thank you whispered at the tv... Awesome.

Syesha - Proud Mary

Showing some legs... Sexy... Vocals were good... She's putting on quite a show...

Jason - I Shot The Sheriff

I like the vibe of the arrangement. It's nice to see Jason moving around a bit. Weak on the chorus, but the rest was really nice.

David Archuleta - Stand By Me

I liked it! Very nice, except for the falsetto. Ugh. But it was good, and he seemed more relaxed than in any previous performances. The crowd was going CRAZY! RANDY SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!!!!!!! His drooling his awful.

David Cook - Baba O'Reiley

Now THAT is more like it!!!! He was so much more in the zone. Very sexy start, with the soft vocals, loved how it kicked up... Amazing. Way, way too short tho - just as he got started, the song ended. I wanted to hear so much more!

Syesha - A Change's Gonna Come

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring.

Jason - Mr Tambourine Man

He forgot his lyrics?????????? I thought other than that, he did really well. I like him with his guitar only. It's inviting and comfortable. Judges comments - it is SO blatant they want him out... Wow.

Archie - Love Me Tender

VERY nice. But why did he do the falsetto again? He missed the mark with the falsetto. But yes, I thought he did well.

It's hard to predict what will happen tomorrow night. Jason was thrown under the bus, and this might have fueled his fanbase into voting even more. Syesha's sexy ways, showing off some legs and crocodile tears will give her the sympathy vote. Archie probably got even more granny votes than usual. David Cook having gone first will not help him, but it might have gotten his fans to actively vote to make sure he'd be saved.

Nonetheless, here are my predictions:

Top 2: David A, David C
Bottom 2: Syesha, Jason
Going home.... Jason.

Some more pondering about the night:

Gotta give it to Archie, he came out strong and big tonight. For the first time in weeks, I really enjoyed his performances. Yes, it was predictable. Yes it's pretty much what he's done throughout the show so far. I thought for the first time in a really long time, he felt his lyrics, which makes a huge difference. Yes, even Love Me Tender, I felt it from him. I had to shake the ew factor off of me after *LOL* but I thought Archie really connected especially with that one. His vocals were spot on, and he really upped his performances at a crucial time. Good for you Archie.

Jason was just painful to watch, and I felt so sorry for him. I liked his ISTS - I thought it was perfect for him. It was not his best performance, but it was a really solid one, IMO. I just couldn't believe how cruel the judges were to him. It's one thing if they didn't like it - to each their own, ymmv and all that jazz - but to crucify him the way they did, that was really bad. I thought Mr.TM was good, nothing earth shattering but good, until he forgot the lyrics. His immaturity showed there, as he was completely unable to cover his mistake up. I don't know how his fans will react in terms of voting - I've read in many places that people were not going to vote for him, to put him out of his misery, so to speak. Others were so enraged that they voted a million times harder, recruiting and all that stuff. So really, who knows what will happen to him...

Syesha did good. She used all she could to remain in the competition, she really left it all out there. From the cleavage to the legs to the sexy hip movements to the playful dancing with Ricky Minor to the tears... She really took advantage of everything available to her to remain in the competition. Her singing was alright - her first song was good but too copycat it felt karaoke. Her second song was better, until she started crying and not hitting notes. I have the gut feeling that she'll be safe.

And David Cook... Poor dear Cookie. It was his week, and he delivered sub par (for him) performances. As many said before, I too think he just psyched himself out of two potentially great performances. He thought too much about it, put too much pressure on himself, and forgot to just go out there and have fun. This was Innocent week all over again - one could read the disappointment in his face after each song. Vocally he sounded great... Although it seems he was a bit out of power in BO'R. Performance wise... HLTW was so tame, I couldn't believe it. BO'R was better in terms of performance, much more like the Cookie we all know and love. I guess the guy has set the bar so high for himself, we all expect much more from him, which is not a bad thing, but also can totally mess with his mind, like it did last night. Still, his sub par performances are better than most contestants best.

Of course I am highly invested in Cookie, and I hope he makes it through... I am really worried about him tho. Between going first, putting on so-so performances, Sy's tears, Jason's smack down and Archie's breakthrough night... That doesn't leave a whole hell of a lot of room for Cookie. I hope his fans voted like they did the night of Innocent to save him. Because despite his so-so night last night, he does deserve to go to the finale. He's been the most consistent of all, the most original of all, and the most versatile of all. And let's not forget the guy can sing the fucking phone book and legions would be swooning because of that gorgeous voice of his.

Result night will be interesting, for sure....
